The World is Flat

My thoughts on Friedman's global outlook is that the world is connected by the internet which everyone can use. No matter the country, the city, or what service you use. And if you aren't up to date on how to use the internet, you will are going be left behind. An example is Friedman talking about his flight experience with Southwest. He wanted to sit in the front of the plane, which meant you needed an A lettered ticket. Unfortunately he was given a B lettered ticket, not because he was late but because he didn't print his ticket off the internet at 12:01am. Everyone has the option to print their ticket off the internet but if you don't know that its possible, your going to have a B ticket. "You are your own travel agent", he says. So you have to updated on what is new in technology.
He talks about education being the future which I think is right. If the whole world is on the same page with technology and products are getting shipped anywhere across the world. Whether its Walmart over sees market or UPS fixing everything. We as people need to know how this works.

And as people who want to be educators we need to teach this too our young adults. The student that design Mozilla with a person thousands of miles away in a different country is just remarkable. But that time is here, normal people can, make there own blogs, podcast, and video about what ever they want. Education is a powerful tool but only good when it is used to improve our world. Our students and younger people need to know how they can use the internet and how it works with everything around to improve there knowledge.

  1. Great reflection, Gareth. I agree that education is a powerful tool and the Internet plays a tremendous role in knowledge acquisition. What do you think--can we use the Internet to amplify all of the great things that are occurring in education?
